Mecanoo, an internationally renowned firm, designed the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi (NHMAD), which officially opened to the public on November 22, 2025. The design language is a striking interpretation of regional geology, offering curated spaces that chronicle the 13.8 billion years of natural history, from cosmic origins to its profound vision for a sustainable future.

Strategically located in the Saadiyat Cultural District, it reinforces Abu Dhabi’s strategy to establish itself as a global cultural and scientific nexus. The inauguration of the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi by His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, further strengthens the UAE’s commitment to leadership in culture and scientific research.

Spanning over 35,000 square meters, NHMAD Abu Dhabi is the largest museum of its kind in the region, with an impressive collection that includes specimens such as the 67-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton named Stan and the famed Murchison meteorite. The museum’s distinctive identity, framed through an Arabian lens, offers an inspiring journey through 13.8 billion years of history, beginning with the Big Bang, covering the formation of our universe, and detailing the story of life on Earth.

The museum serves both purposes, as a major visitor attraction and as a crucial scientific research and teaching institution, featuring advanced on-site facilities such as the PalaeoLab and the Life Sciences Lab. The inclusion of these labs, alongside galleries like Arabia’s Climate and the Human Story, underscores the museum’s commitment to scientific transparency and public engagement.

Mecanoo’s Geo-Inspired Design

Drawing inspiration from geological forms and wadis, the architecture evolved into sculpted volumes that echo the eroded rock formations of the surroundings. Mecanoo envisioned the repetition of geometric forms, pentagonal shapes reminiscent of both cellular structures found in biology and naturally occurring crystal patterns, establishing a visual link between the micro (cellular life) and macro (geological and crystalline structures) scales of the natural world.

This approach to design serves as a preparatory exhibit for visitors, fostering a profound connection with nature even before they enter the galleries. Building on the sustainable ethos, the structure employs passive strategies to mitigate the harsh Gulf environment. The highly efficient facade achieves a 49.4% reduction in external heat gains, maintaining controlled temperature and humidity to preserve collections such as fossils and organic materials. The use of 70% certified timber, along with 95% of paints and finishes being low-emissivity, emphasises the museum’s commitment to sustainability.

The opening of Mecanoo’s Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi within the Saadiyat Cultural District demonstrates a synthesis of local geological heritage and cutting-edge sustainability. It is a landmark piece of scientific infrastructure, a dynamic hub for education and research, elevating the UAE’s role in the collective understanding of Earth’s past, present, and future pathways toward sustainability.

It serves as an active platform for crafting future research and fostering dialogue through its ongoing public programming, educational workshops, and community-led initiatives.

The Natural History Museum now joins a growing ecosystem of world-class institutions within the Saadiyat Cultural District, including the Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena, and the forthcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum.

She blends her love for reading, traveling, and poetry to explore how spaces shape the way we live, think, and feel. Curious about the human-centric design, she dives into philosophy, psychology, and neuroarchitecture to better understand the deep connection between people and places. For her, every city is a story waiting to be told - and writing is how she brings those stories to life. She believes that learning never ends and hopes her work sparks new ways of seeing the world through profound architectural narratives.
