Interconnected and woven into the urban fabric rises a bridge inviting pedestrians to explore and experience the streaming river and the scenic cityscape. STERLING PRESSER Architects+Engineers envisioned a cyclist and pedestrian footbridge as a functional structure uniquely blend to unite traffic route and proximity. Stretching 600-meters long, the pedestrian and cyclist deck arises from a succession of urban scenarios and atmospheres: parks, street spaces, short narrow passages and wide riverside promenades. Undurraga Devés Arquitectos wooden criss-cross framed structure for Chilean Pavilion – Expo Milano acted as a massive showcase mounted on steel columns. The striking entrance to the building exhibited metallic black staircases and ramps curling from the ground. The space below the columns presented a vast open space envisaged for functions cum relaxing area, along with coffee shops and other accessories. The building displayed a complex facade articulation while ushering balance between inside and outside as a transparent element. The Kale Systems inspiration was taken from common kale (Brassica Oleracea), on which the edges of its green leaves grow significantly faster and larger than the core of the leaves, resulting in overall folded curly shapes with large surface areas. The edge growth has been simulated in Grasshopper using tools from Kangaroo. By a set of rules, seemingly random lines are being generated, recorded growing over time. The generated lines are then connected to a delicate surface, which is the common driver for further explorations.
