The Kale Systems inspiration was taken from common kale (Brassica Oleracea), on which the edges of its green leaves grow significantly faster and larger than the core of the leaves, resulting in overall folded curly shapes with large surface areas. The edge growth has been simulated in Grasshopper using tools from Kangaroo. By a set of rules, seemingly random lines are being generated, recorded growing over time. The generated lines are then connected to a delicate surface, which is the common driver for further explorations.

The Eco-Parametric Structures workshop organized by PAACADEMY was held from 2nd March to the 13th April 2021 on an online platform. Studio Mamou-Mani is one of the studio workshops at the PAACADEMY with a focus on combining sustainability with parametric design. The studio with the 6 intriguing sessions lead by London-based architect, Arthur Mamou-Mani and his team was articulated on the topic of wooden construction through computational design methods. The session focused on developing a parametric, modular, and environmentally conscious system in an online studio through interactive workshops and discussions.

Located above the polar circle in the north of Sweden, the structure ascends from the stark landscape, reaching for the sky, offering a space to actively view the spectacles of aurora borealis.

Multiple ways of modularising and giving depth to the surface are explored, primarily using the ‘orient on surface’ command in Grasshopper with a variety of timber module options. This is complemented with ‘split tree’ data structures to evoke the sense of increased dynamism and intensity closer to the leaf loft outer edge. Experiments with hollow timber slats on the leaf loft results in the burst of twisting ladder strands carrying you up to the sky.

Arthur Mamou – Mani and his team from Mamou-Mani led 6 intriguing sessions with PAACADEMY on creating an ecological solution through computational design methods. The session focused on developing a parametric, modular and environmentally conscious system in an online studio through interactive workshops and discussions.
