Saudi Arabia has paused construction of the Mukaab, a cube-shaped architectural megaproject at the heart of the New Murabba development in Riyadh. The decision comes as the kingdom reassesses the financial viability and strategic relevance of the project, which had been positioned as part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s broader Vision 2030 economic transformation agenda.
Work on the Mukaab beyond initial soil excavation and foundation pilings has been halted, and its future now remains uncertain as officials review funding structures and long-term feasibility.
Part of the New Murabba Urban Development
The Mukaab was planned as a 400-meter by 400-meter metal cube to anchor the New Murabba district, a mixed-use downtown project in Riyadh intended to house residential, commercial, and cultural spaces.
At full build-out, the interior of the cube was designed to offer around 2 million square meters of floor space, enough to fit the equivalent of about 20 Empire State Buildings within its volume.
Inside, the design envisioned a terraced central structure more than 300 meters tall, with a massive dome and digital display.
Shift in Government Priorities
According to multiple people familiar with internal deliberations at the Public Investment Fund (PIF), Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund backing major infrastructure and development projects, the decision reflects a broader shift in spending priorities.
The PIF is reassessing large-scale “gigaprojects” and redirecting capital and strategic focus toward initiatives with clearer short-term economic returns and commercial viability. These include infrastructure for Expo 2030 in Riyadh, preparations for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, the Diriyah cultural and mixed-use development, and the Qiddiya entertainment and tourism zone.
Officials have acknowledged fiscal pressure from lower oil revenues and the need to manage public spending sustainably, leading to delays, rescoping, or suspension of high-cost projects where necessary.
Originally, the development was targeted for completion by 2030, aligning with Vision 2030 goals. With the suspension of Mukaab construction and broader project reviews underway, official expectations now extend the timeline toward 2040.
Official Response and What Happens Next
Saudi government ministries, the Public Investment Fund, and New Murabba project representatives declined to comment publicly when approached by Reuters and other outlets reporting on the suspension.
The halt does not represent an official cancellation of the Mukaab but rather a pause while financial and strategic factors are reviewed. Surrounding real estate and infrastructure work within New Murabba is expected to continue as part of the longer-term urban development plan.
Background on the Mukaab Project
Launched in February 2023, the Mukaab was envisioned as one of the most iconic structures in Mukaab, combining immersive public spaces, retail, residential units, and technological experiences.
Its design drew inspiration from the region’s heritage architecture and modern urban concepts, but also encountered some public discussion over symbolic form and scale.
The suspension marks the first publicly reported reassessment of a major Vision 2030 megaproject in the Saudi capital, following similar reviews of other flagship developments.
