Vertical Aerospace has unveiled Valo, its next-generation electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft designed to accelerate commercial urban air taxis with zero-emission routes and enhanced safety features. The UK-based aerospace manufacturer plans to certify Valo for passenger operations by 2028, with initial services targeting airport-to-city and urban route networks in major global cities, including New York and London.

Design, Performance, and Safety Architecture

Valo succeeds Vertical’s earlier VX4 prototype and represents the company’s transition from prototype development toward production and commercial service. It integrates advanced aerospace engineering and industry partnerships to deliver performance, safety, and passenger comfort.

Aircraft Performance and Propulsion

Valo is an all-electric eVTOL aircraft engineered for vertical takeoff and landing, combined with efficient forward cruise. It is designed to:

  • Cruise up to ~150 mph (241 km/h) over a range of up to ~100 miles (161 km) on a single charge.
  • Operate with zero direct emissions, supporting sustainable urban and regional transport.
  • Employ a lift-plus-cruise architecture with eight electric propulsion units (motors) fed by an under-floor battery system of liquid-cooled packs for power redundancy and safety.

This configuration separates vertical lift from cruise propulsion, improving energy use and performance efficiency compared with traditional rotorcraft architectures.

Aerodynamics and Safety

Valo’s airframe has been refined through extensive flight testing and design iteration, informed by operator and airline feedback. Notable technical elements include:

  • A more aerodynamic airframe, redesigned wings, and optimized propeller architecture for efficient cruise performance.
  • Full certifiable redundancy in systems and power architecture to meet rigorous global safety standards.
  • Safety engineering aimed at achieving airliner-level reliability under regulatory frameworks such as UK CAA and EASA VTOL standards.

Certification efforts include building multiple test and certification aircraft in the UK to support final regulatory approval processes

Cabin and Payload

Valo’s cabin is designed for comfort and utility:

  • Four-seat premium cabin with panoramic windows and generous personal space at entry into service.
  • A flexible interior layout that can expand to six seats, improving operational economics for high-demand routes.
  • Class-leading luggage capacity, with space for multiple cabin and checked bags, addresses real-world travel needs.

The aircraft’s payload at entry service is targeted at around 550 kg (1,200 lbs), accommodating passengers and baggage within scalable mission profiles.

Planned Air Taxi Networks and Deployment Strategy

Vertical Aerospace is advancing plans to deploy Valo in structured urban air taxi services, with early focus areas in New York City and the United Kingdom, reflecting both infrastructure readiness and market demand.

New York City U.S. Tour and Route Framework

In January 2026, Vertical brought Valo to New York to showcase the full-scale aircraft and outline plans for electric air taxi routes. The initiative, developed in partnership with Bristow Group and Skyports Infrastructure, focuses on:

  • Airport transfers, such as rapid connections from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Manhattan, reduce multi-hour ground journeys to minutes.
  • Urban point-to-point services connecting heliports and skyports within the metro area.
  • Leisure, event, and emergency use cases, expanding Valo’s role beyond commuter travel.

Complementing urban routes, partners are examining infrastructure integration using existing heliport networks and future vertiport sites.

United Kingdom and European Networks

Vertical is also preparing to launch the UK’s first electric air taxi network, with proposed routes connecting major urban hubs and transport centers such as Canary Wharf and Heathrow Airport.

Across Europe, agreements with operators like Héli Air Monaco signal interest in deploying Valo on premium routes in the French Riviera, further broadening commercial application.

Outlook and Industry Context

Valo’s development represents a significant step in advanced air mobility (AAM), bringing eVTOL technology closer to commercial reality with certification and operational targets set for 2028 and beyond.

By combining electric power, safety-focused design, and scalable air taxi networks, Vertical Aerospace aims to complement existing transportation systems with efficient, environmentally conscious alternatives for short-haul travel.
