Sanjay Puri Architects in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India, designed a 4-story, 27,000-square-foot home called Zen Spaces. The clients wanted a new house because their family had grown, and the lot was pretty big. There was already a house on the southern side. The new house is built at the very northern end of the garden, with roads on three sides. Most of the old garden is kept as a common area for both houses. The trees that were already there were kept, and the new house was built in the space between them.
The house is made up of cube-shaped rooms connected by an open courtyard. It was built on four floors so that three generations can live together. There are living and eating rooms on the first and second floors, as well as three bedrooms and a small lounge on each level. On the second floor, there is a room that can be used for many things and leads to a big terrace facing north.
On the southern side of the house, there is a winter deck that faces the large garden. On the northern end, there is a summer deck that runs along the front of the main living and eating areas.
GFRC screens cover the east, west, and south sides of the house, leaving the north side more open. This keeps the house cooler in the summer and gives people more privacy while reducing noise from the main road that the house faces. These screens are a nod to the stone screens that are common in Jaipur and Rajasthani buildings.
The house is built on a simple RCC frame, and the walls are made of fly ash bricks. The house also has a solar water heating system, rainwater collection, and recycling for water. The house was built by local contract workers, and most of the materials used were found within 100 km of the house.
