After two decades of anticipation and nearly $1 billion in investment, Egypt has officially set November 1, 2025, as the opening date for the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). Built close to the Great Pyramids, about two kilometers away, the museum is designed to be the largest cultural space centered on one civilization worldwide.

Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly set the November 1 opening, underscoring that the decision has President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s approval. The announcement puts an end to years of speculation and delays surrounding the landmark project.

The Grand Egyptian Museum occupies 50 hectares on the western edge of Cairo, overlooking the Great Pyramid of Khufu. Its centerpiece is the monumental atrium, where visitors will encounter the 83-ton statue of Ramesses II, relocated from Cairo to preside over the grand space. A sweeping Grand Staircase will guide visitors chronologically through ancient Egypt’s dynastic history, featuring statues and reliefs spanning more than 7,000 years.

Grand Egyptian Museum Collections and Artifacts

GEM will house over 100,000 artifacts, with 20,000 items being displayed for the very first time. Among the most anticipated attractions is the complete Tutankhamun collection, a remarkable assemblage of 5,398 objects, including the young pharaoh’s iconic golden mask, chariots, and funerary treasures. This will be the first time the full set has been presented together since Howard Carter’s 1922 discovery.

    Other major highlights include:

    • The second solar boat of Khufu, meticulously restored for $5 million.
    • The treasures of Queen Hetepheres, mother of Khufu.
    • The collections of Yuya and Tuyu, Tutankhamun’s great-grandparents.

The museum’s 7,500-square-meter Tutankhamun Hall will be a centerpiece, offering a contextual look at the boy king’s life, death, and afterlife.

The November 1 opening will begin with a VIP event for heads of state, dignitaries, and international cultural leaders. Public access is scheduled to begin on November 4, 2025, a date chosen to align with the 103rd anniversary of Tutankhamun’s tomb discovery.

The project has faced multiple delays due to political upheaval, the COVID-19 pandemic, and regional conflicts. However, Egyptian authorities are confident that this date will mark the definitive debut of the long-awaited institution.

The Grand Egyptian Museum spans a massive 500,000 m² in total area, featuring 167,000 m² of built-up space and 81,000 m² of exhibition areas, a comprehensive layout that includes permanent and temporary galleries, a dedicated children’s museum, virtual installations, and digital theaters. Irish-based Heneghan Peng Architects, chosen through a global design competition, leads the architectural vision, supported by engineering expertise from Arup and Buro Happold. The construction execution is a collaborative effort between Egypt’s Orascom Construction and Belgium’s BESIX joint venture.

The Grand Egyptian Museum is expected to significantly boost Egypt’s tourism sector, a vital contributor to the national economy. Ahmed Ghoneim, CEO of the Grand Egyptian Museum, has called the project “a state-of-the-art cultural hub” that will reshape Egypt’s global image.
