Along the banks of the River Seine in Rouen, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) unveils “The Sail,” a stunning new congress center in Rouen (France) that gracefully bridges the city’s past and future. With its characteristic sweeping timber roof that seems like a sail in motion, the design celebrates Rouen’s deep maritime spirit while inviting people back to the riverfront.

Envisioned as more than just a public meeting place, this contemporary landmark opens to the public as a lively hub of culture, community, and connection. Rooted in Rouen’s heritage yet forward-looking in form, The Sail embodies the poetry of movement, nature, and human gathering along the water’s edge.

Inspired by Rouen’s charming half-timbered houses, the new Congress Centre reimagines tradition through a modern, sustainable lens. Its glass volumes framed in timber form, topped with sweeping photovoltaic roofs, create a dynamic dialogue between heritage and innovation.

The center features two auditoriums, exhibition halls, meeting spaces, and a restaurant that come together beneath an expansive timber canopy. The design is an architectural gesture that invites community, creativity, and collaboration under a single roof. The architecture blends culture, economy, and sustainability, standing as a living symbol of Rouen’s commitment to a brighter, more evolving future.

The Sails’ tallest façade is designed to face the river and main road, with the entire structure composed of long timber columns topped with a roofline that curves up towards one end. The curved roof is formed with flowing waves that extend to form canopies over seamlessly integrated outdoor spaces. The center greets its visitors from the highway with a vertical façade, while the city side features a roof with sheltered canopies extending into the landscaped spaces.

Designed with sustainability at its core, the timber construction of the Congress Center blends innovation with the timeless character of Rouen’s architectural heritage. Designed to breathe with light and nature, its sustainable energy-producing roof and expansive glass façades create interiors filled with warmth, transparency, and life. Beyond its striking form, the building functions as both a low-impact landmark and a welcoming cultural hub, where the city and its people can gather, connect, and celebrate.
