The Olympic Chakra: Reimagining Narendra Modi Stadium for the 2036 Olympics

Ahmedabad, already home to the world’s largest cricket stadium, is imagining a bold leap into the future with a fresh, imaginative concept. “Olympic Chakra” is gaining attention as a bold framework that reimagines Ahmedabad’s iconic Narendra Modi Stadium as the heart of a transformative Olympic Park. Though currently a conceptual vision, it reflects the city’s evolving ambitions to host global sporting spectacles like the 2036 Olympics.

The Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), which owns and manages the Narendra Modi Stadium, has been a driving force in positioning Ahmedabad as a global sports destination. Beyond cricket, the GCA has partnered with state authorities on the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, a 236-acre complex that places the stadium at its core.

    Ahmedabad’s Olympic Future

At its center lies the Narendra Modi Stadium, re-envisioned as the hub of a futuristic Olympic Park. The concept envisions five lotus-petal–shaped sporting biomes radiating from the Narendra Modi Stadium, each designed to offer a distinct athletic experience, and all interconnected through underground high-speed travelators. The lotus motif, deeply rooted in Indian symbolism, doubles as a metaphor for unity, balance, and growth.

The Aquatic Atoll is envisioned as a translucent dome housing swimming and diving arenas, with interiors modeled on a coral reef ecosystem, blending competition with ecological storytelling. The Temperate Grove creates an indoor athletics and gymnastics complex set within a climate-controlled forest, bringing nature into the sporting experience. Towering above is The Alpine Spire, a biome simulating high-altitude conditions to host specialized events and athlete training. The plan also includes The Racquet Terraces and The Combat Courtyard, dedicated to racket sports and martial disciplines.

Underground, the concept introduces high-speed travelators linking each biome, ensuring athletes and spectators move seamlessly across venues. Overhead, the design includes a vast Sardar Patel Olympic Greens, a civic park meant to redefine post-Games green urban spaces.

Adding another layer is the “Olympic Heritage River Loop,” inspired by both the Olympic rings and lotus symmetry. It proposes a circular extension of the Sabarmati Riverfront, weaving together venues, historic landmarks, and urban hubs through waterways and active landscapes. This watercourse would act as a cultural spine, linking the Games to Ahmedabad’s heritage while creating new recreational corridors.
