Week 1
Introduction
The first session starts with welcoming students. Hamid and Giuseppe introduced the studio workshop which continued with a lecture from Giuseppe. Also, students introduced themselves, their backgrounds, and their interests.
Giuseppe Fallacara’s Lecture
Giuseppe Fallacara provided an immersive lecture on the world of stone and stereotomy. He started from a theoretical basis and a long history of stereotomy, and then addressed many topics including the paradox between the heaviness of the material and the lightness of stone, early works of important architects, techniques of deformation, and the creation of flat and spherical vaults.
Maurizio Barberio’s Lecture
Maurizio Barberio delivered a lecture on the nexus of digital stereotomy, parametric form-finding, and digital fabrication. He specifically addressed additive and subtractive manufacturing, dividing structures as tessellations for the ease of fabrication, and Sub-D modeling.
Dario Costantino & Ilaria Cavaliere’s presentation
As the outcomes of the studio are supposed to be implemented in virtual and Augmented realities, Dario and Ilaria demonstrated these technologies along with Mixed Reality(MR). They focused on the reasons why we need VR, applications of VR to the cultural heritage, real-time renderings, and visualization skills to reach desired results.
Rhino3D Workflow
Finally, Maurizio Barberio provided a Rhino3D workflow, focusing on Sub-D modeling. He started with the basics of Sub-D modeling, combining the best features of polygonal modeling and NURBS modeling. As a result, complex, smooth, and facet-free surfaces are obtained.
