Sightful, a Tel Aviv–based startup specializing in spatial computing hardware and software, has officially launched the Spacetop G1, the world’s first screen-free AR laptop. This portable device eliminates the traditional screen, using a pair of Xreal AR glasses to project a private 100-inch virtual display visible only to the user.

Designed for mobile professionals, digital creatives, and remote workers, the Spacetop G1 also holds unique potential for architects and designers, offering a new way to visualize, multitask, and present spatial information in real-world contexts.

The Spacetop G1 is available for preorder at $1,900, with shipments scheduled to begin in October 2024. It features Xreal AR glasses (1920×1080 resolution per eye, 50° field of view, 90 Hz OLED), a Qualcomm Snapdragon QCS8550 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage, delivering around eight hours of battery life.

What Makes the Spacetop G1 Tick

    • Ultra-large virtual workspace: A 100‑inch floating screen replaces physical monitors, allowing multiple prismatic windows around you and focusing all visual output through the AR glasses.
    • Spatial OS: SpaceOS, built on Chromium, supports intuitive window gestures and AI-powered pointer snapping. It’s optimized for web-based productivity tools such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and Figma, with minimal reliance on local storage. Additional features include intelligent workspace management, voice-activated navigation, and contextual app prioritization.
    • Enhanced portability: The AR glasses fold into the compact base. The total weight is approximately 3.08 lb, with the glasses weighing 0.18 lb.
    • High visibility with dimming: OLED displays with a 90 Hz refresh rate and built-in dimming allow you to work comfortably even in bright ambient light.
    • Privacy-first: The virtual workspace is visible only to the user, preventing shoulder surfing in public spaces.
    • Multitasking efficiency: Users can place up to a dozen virtual windows around their field of view, spatially organizing apps and content without overlap.

Reshaping Architecture & Built Environment Workflows

    1. Expansive, mobile drafting spaces

Architects can project full CAD views or BIM models on a virtual 100″ canvas, with no need for portable drafting tables or large external monitors. Sketching, revisiting models, and adjusting layouts become seamless, even in client meeting rooms or on-site.

    2. Ergonomic, collaborative site planning

By positioning virtual building plans at eye level, the Spacetop G1 encourages better posture. Architects can walk clients through floor layouts or sectional views hands-free, fostering more natural spatial dialogues.

    3. On-site AR overlays

Overlaying virtual building elements over real-world conditions, like piping, elevations, or conduits, becomes possible during inspections. The travel-motion tracking mode ensures the AR “screens” stay fixed even while walking or traveling.

    4. Multi-window BIM management

Manage Revit or Rhino V-Ray renders side by side with specifications, research, and communication tools, all within customizable windows. Though current hardware favors lightweight work, spatial organization mirrors professional desktop setups, even on the go.

    5. Enhanced privacy & client immersion

With projection limited to AR glasses, only you can see sensitive documents or design reviews. Present immersive walkthroughs without crowded office setups or projector limitations.

    Real‑World Fit & Limitations

While the Spacetop G1 shines in spatial multitasking, it isn’t built for intense CAD/GIS rendering or VR modeling. Its Snapdragon QCS8550 chip and 128 GB storage lean toward web-based tools and document editing.

The fixation to Xreal glasses may limit flexibility; prescription lens insertion helps, but wearing AR specs long-term isn’t for everyone. Still, its portability and ergonomic impact could make it a staple for traveling professionals.

The Spacetop G1 signifies a shift: spatial computing isn’t a far-off dream, it’s landing in the hands of professionals now. For architects and engineers, it offers a way to carry an entire drafting studio in a sleek keyboard shell. It allows free rotation, repositioning, and layering of windows across a virtual expanse on-site, in offices, or in transit.

While it won’t replace desktop workstations for heavy modeling today, the Spacetop G1 marks the emergence of spatial-first workflows in architecture. This device hints at a future where design environments unfold around you, untethered from screens and desks, transforming how we visualize and collaborate in the built world.
