Scott Brownrigg has revealed the design concepts for Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport’s (Medina Airport) new expansion. The designs, created specifically for Tibah Airports, which manages the airport, will improve the traveler experience for the millions of pilgrims who travel to Medina for the Hajj and Umrah every year. By 2028, the airport can host up to 17 million more passengers annually. Additionally, on-site construction for the project will begin later in 2024.
The current Terminal 1, which was also designed and constructed by Scott Brownrigg in 2014, will be transformed into an international airport with a recently remodeled terminal to accommodate charter aircraft for the Hajj and Umrah.
The new terminals’ designs, according to the architects, are an homage to the previous airport’s unusual architectural character, which was influenced by its significance as a major entry point for millions of pilgrims traveling to Medina. The new domestic terminal will be built on 3 stories and feature the same modular steel palm tree-shaped columns, which are representations of wealth and harmony.
The revitalized terminal and new domestic terminal will provide passengers with an illuminating experience, providing comfort and tranquillity. Our design aspires to reflect the unique essence of the Hijaz region and the revered holy city of Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah.

Also, the airport was the first commercial airport terminal in the Middle East and North Africa to receive a LEED Gold certification. The layout will both adhere to this Gold standard and permit further growth.
