Rabat Ibn Sina Hospital: HKS Architects Reimagine Morocco’s Largest Healthcare Hub

HKS Architects has envisioned the new Ibn Sina Hospital in Rabat as an open, uplifting healthcare destination, designed as more than just a conventional medical facility.

It is proposed to become Morocco’s largest general hospital, spanning around 139,640 square meters (1.5 million square feet). The project is shaped around a single goal: delivering exceptional patient care within a setting that is safe, restorative, and profoundly therapeutic.

The hospital is imagined not only as a place of healing but also as a vibrant public facility. Connectivity becomes a defining design feature, achieved through open interior courtyards with a low and welcoming podium, which together create a serene “tower in a garden” experience.

    Design Concept

The hospital’s design concept revolves around the idea of a seed planted that slowly rises from the earth, growing upward with purpose and strength. This rising form shapes a healthcare landmark for the city, one that feels both grounded and futuristic. At its core, the concept brings together three existing separate hospitals into a single unified structure.

The hospital brings an entire ecosystem with different components of care under one roof, creating a place where staff collaboration flourishes, and patients find seamless access to every healthcare service they need. The heart facility is composed of a large atrium, with a great landscaped park from which all programs branch outward across the facility, becoming the hospital’s connective soul and linking the building to the life of the city. One side flows into the ambulatory outpatient areas, while the other expands into the major diagnostic and treatment wing, crowned by a luminous patient tower above.

The hospital rises from a landscaped deck that gently covers the busy drop-off zone below, welcoming visitors into a pedestrian-friendly environment that feels calm, green, and truly human-centered.

The design embodies a forward-thinking vision, weaving state-of-the-art technology with thoughtful energy conservation. Interior lightwells and carefully tuned façade panels optimize daylight, allowing it to penetrate patient rooms and public spaces, filling them with soft, natural light that enhances comfort, well-being, and the overall healing experience.

The Heart Center is woven into the building’s diagnostic and treatment block, creating a space where services align and care becomes more efficient and connected. The heart center is also recognized for its own established identity, with dedicated drop-off and entrance spaces and vertical circulation systems. The education center is conceived as a core element of the building itself, reinforcing a culture of excellence at the heart of the healthcare system.
