Officially inaugurated by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan on 4 September 2025, Morocco has unveiled its new national stadium, the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, with the Moroccan national team marking the occasion in style by defeating Niger 5–0 in a CAF qualifying match the following day.

Designed by Populous, the global leader in sports and entertainment architecture, the 68,700-capacity stadium features a parametrically designed LED façade, a landmark in innovation and design. The seating bowl has been configured to prioritize acoustics and atmosphere, placing fans as close as possible to the pitch to channel their energy into an overwhelming sonic wall.

Led by the National Agency for Public Facilities of Morocco, the stadium was designed in full compliance with FIFA specifications and is capable of hosting matches up to the semi-finals of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The project integrates state-of-the-art media and broadcast facilities, a 360° wind-shielding roof, and expanded VVIP, VIP, and hospitality areas.

The stadium will serve as the home of Morocco’s national team as they compete at the highest level, while also inspiring the nation’s youth. Remarkably, the project was delivered in just 24 months, with seamless coordination across multiple Populous offices and Moroccan contractor SGTM.

    Parametric Façade Design

The stadium façade, created through parametric design, draws inspiration from Rabat’s interlaced palm leaves as well as Morocco’s artisanal heritage, including Point de Fez embroidery and traditional ornamentation.

Its shimmering golden profile rises from the eucalyptus forest of Rabat’s southern green belt, symbolizing Morocco’s spirit of innovation and technological strength as it opens toward the Atlantic Ocean.

Covering 100,000 m², the façade is composed of 19,200 champagne-colored aluminum triangles, each uniquely dimensioned. At sunset, the façade transforms into a spectacular light show, illuminated by 70 km of LED strips spiraling around the structure.

Immersive Stadium Bowl Connecting Fans and Pitch

At the heart of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium lies its bowl, designed to fuse Morocco’s unmatched football passion with the on-field action.

The south side features a vast open concourse leading into a steep, two-tiered 23,000-capacity “Kop” stand, one of the largest supporter sections in Africa and Europe. The upper tier cantilevers eight meters above the lower, creating the impression of floating over the pitch while directly overlooking the goal. This dual-tiered south stand acts as a powerful “loudspeaker,” amplifying supporter passion across the stadium.

The West Stand houses VVIP and VIP areas, including skyboxes and lounges centered on the Royal Box. The East Stand provides a flexible mix of lounges and skyboxes spread across three tiers. Level 2 skyboxes form a U-shaped ring around the pitch, offering optimal views of both the game and the South Kop’s vibrant atmosphere.

This integrated design ensures an electrifying stadium experience, with fans fully immersed at every level.

    Redevelopment and Construction

The original Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium was built in 1983 for the Mediterranean Games and has now been fully redeveloped between 2023 and 2025 for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025. The transformation was completed in just 24 months, thanks to the adaptability of Populous and the efficiency of Moroccan contractor SGTM.

As Morocco’s flagship sports venue, the redeveloped stadium will enable the Kingdom to host major international events, driving both economic growth and social development. It will serve as the stage for the opening match, semi-finals, and final of AFCON 2025, which begins on 21 December 2025. Beyond AFCON, Morocco will also host the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for the next four years, starting in October 2025.

Looking further ahead, Morocco, together with Spain and Portugal, will co-host the FIFA World Cup 2030. Complementing this, Populous, in association with Oualalou + Choi, is also designing the Grand Stade Hassan II in Benslimane. With a projected capacity of 115,000 seats, it will become the largest football stadium in the world, capable of hosting the opening or final matches of the 2030 tournament.

    Construction Timeline

Ground was broken in September 2023, leaving only 24 months to design and construct the 68,700-seat stadium. This ambitious timeline was achieved thanks to the adaptability and responsiveness of Populous, working in close integration with Moroccan construction methods led by Société Générale des Travaux du Maroc (SGTM).
