    Computational Kinematics:

    Join us for a webinar on generative algorithms in Grasshopper3D and their applications in designing deployable and transformable structures. Using Kangaroo3D and Karamba3D plugins, we will simulate and analyze the kinetic behavior of these structures.

    The Scope of the Studio:

    Designing deployable habitats is not only practical for transportation by rocket or helicopter, but also leads to innovative and mesmerizing kinetic designs that fold, inflate, and expand in unique ways. Participants will learn how to use computational strategies to create three types of deployable structures: technical origami, inflatables, and spatial linkage mechanisms.

    Under the guidance of Karl-Johan, you will have the opportunity to develop your own deployable space-habitat concept and receive one-on-one feedback. At the end of the workshop, we will review and discuss the concepts as a group. Experience with Rhino and Grasshopper3D is expected.

    Program:

    Session 1: February 18th | 4.5h:
    30min – Introduction
    1h – Space architecture lecture
    3h – Technical tutorial

    Session 2: February 19th | 4.5h:
    1.5h – Technical tutorial
    2h – Individual tutoring
    1h – Project review

    Software:

    • Rhinocerous3D
    • Plugins to be used:
      – Grashopper3d
      – Kangaroo3D
      – Karamba3D

    Important Notes:

    • The Computational Kinematics workshop by PAACADEMY will start on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 17:00 GMT.
    • Total sessions: 2 sessions
    • Daily Schedule: 17:00 – 21:00 GMT.
    • The entire studio will be recorded, and videos will be available for participants just a day after the class for an unlimited time.
    • PAACADEMY will provide a certificate of attendance for students who deliver a final project.
    • The studio has limited seats. Tickets are non-transferable & non-refundable. Please read before you purchase.

    Computational Kinematics

    Karl-Johan Sørensen is a computational designer, MIT student, and co-founder of SAGA Space Architects, a design practice working on making space livable for future space travelers by approaching the design of habitats from a human perspective. His interests lie in exploring digital morphogenesis, with a long-standing devotion to origami geometry. In 2020 this materialized into a foldable analog moon habitat, designed, fabricated, and tested by SAGA. His research in computation focuses on geometry-generating algorithms and structural optimization. This has brought Karl-Johan to MIT where he is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Architecture and Computation (SMArchS).
