Lisbon, Portugal – S.L. Benfica has unveiled an ambitious new master plan for Estádio da Luz, transforming the legendary stadium into a global destination for sport, culture, and entertainment. Designed by the renowned international architecture firm Populous, in collaboration with Lisbon-based Saraiva + Associados, this revitalization will reimagine the stadium and its surrounding precinct as a vibrant civic, commercial, and community hub.

Having originally designed Estádio da Luz for UEFA Euro 2004, Populous returns to lead this transformative vision, bringing together contemporary design, next-generation fan experiences, and sustainable urban development.

Rui Costa, President of S.L. Benfica, said, “This is a strategic project, focused on our members, fans, and the continued growth of the club, which we intend to begin implementing immediately. It is a project in the true Benfica spirit, one that enhances the competitive environment, deepens the club experience, and welcomes all those who want to experience what it means to be part of the Chama Imensa, the greatest in Portugal.”

A Cultural and Sporting District Anchored by Architecture

The master plan redefines the precinct around Estádio da Luz as a dynamic district for sports, culture, and community. At its core, the project is both a strategic upgrade and a civic investment, aligning with leading global venues such as Wembley Stadium and Manchester City’s Etihad Campus.

    Key Developments Include:

    • Mixed-use commercial and residential buildings, supporting long-term economic sustainability and urban vitality.
    • A 10,000-seat multi-purpose indoor arena, purpose-built for concerts, esports, cultural shows, and major sporting events.
    • Two new indoor sports halls (2,500 and 1,500 seats), replacing existing pavilions and offering flexible space for basketball, volleyball, and boxing.
    • A new community swimming pool (25x25m), offering high-quality facilities for residents and fans.
    • A 500-seat theatre and events venue, catering to diverse cultural programming.
    • Rooftop football pitch and running track, delivering high-performance training environments in the city centre.

A Plaza Designed for the Fans, Inspired by Lisbon’s Public Spaces

A key highlight of the master plan is the creation of a new fan plaza, a 100m by 40m open-air gathering space located directly in front of the stadium’s main façade. Drawing inspiration from Lisbon’s historic civic squares, particularly Praça do Rossio, this area is designed to become a year-round destination for supporters and visitors alike.

With space for over 10,000 people, the plaza will serve as a dynamic pre- and post-match hub, featuring a central DJ deck and an event stage for live entertainment. The plaza will be framed by food and beverage outlets, retail zones, and terraced restaurants, giving fans and locals a lively new public realm. To enhance accessibility and movement across the site, the design incorporates new pedestrian bridges that improve flow across the campus.

One of the most meaningful elements is the relocation of the Eusébio statue, which will be positioned at the entrance to the plaza. Honouring the club’s most iconic player, the statue will be a symbolic and visual anchor, welcoming supporters with a clear view of the stadium behind it.

Tom Jones, Senior Principal at Populous, commented, “This masterplan sets a new benchmark for how stadiums can serve as cultural and community anchors. Estádio da Luz will not only preserve Benfica’s legacy but also ignite its future.”

A Contemporary Architectural Identity for Estádio da Luz

The stadium itself will receive a bold new exterior that redefines its architectural character while preserving its most recognizable elements. The design introduces a fluid, responsive façade that gives the building a modern edge while improving its environmental performance.

This façade integrates a programmable LED lighting system, allowing the entire stadium to come alive with digital displays on matchdays and during special events. It turns the stadium into a visual landmark within the Lisbon skyline and provides an immersive backdrop to the new fan plaza.

To enhance comfort within the venue, the façade includes architectural shading features that reduce heat exposure and improve airflow throughout the concourses. Additionally, the plan introduces a new fourth level outside the existing seating bowl. This 6,800-square-metre expansion will accommodate premium hospitality areas, club offices, and commercial spaces, activating the stadium as a business and entertainment venue even on non-matchdays.

Importantly, the iconic curved roof trusses from the original 2004 design will be retained, preserving the architecture of Estádio da Luz while adapting it for future generations.

    Sustainability as a Core Principle

The redevelopment takes a forward-looking approach to environmental design. A suite of sustainable technologies and strategies will be embedded across the site to ensure long-term ecological and social benefits for the Lisbon community.

Photovoltaic panels will be installed on the roof of the new arena, supporting renewable energy production. Green roofs and rainwater harvesting systems will help manage water usage and reduce urban heat impact. The landscaping plan incorporates native vegetation and ecological zones to support local biodiversity and strengthen the precinct’s environmental resilience.

It offers public amenities and recreational spaces that serve the city of Lisbon throughout the year, making the stadium a vibrant part of daily urban life on matchday.

Jorge Betancor, Principal at Populous and head of the firm’s Portugal operations, added, “This redevelopment aligns Estádio da Luz with world-leading venues and supports Portugal’s preparations to host international tournaments like the 2030 World Cup.”

The Estádio da Luz masterplan reaffirms Benfica’s place as a forward-thinking club at the heart of Portugal’s sporting identity.
