The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has unveiled early plans for a new pedestrian bridge that aims to become an engineering and urban landmark spanning the Chao Phraya River. Envisioned as the city’s first river crossing dedicated primarily to pedestrians, the project marks a significant shift toward walkable, human-centered infrastructure.
Currently in the study phase, initial models reveal a striking contemporary form, defined by a dynamic lattice structure interwoven with rest areas and lush landscaping, offering shaded pauses and panoramic views connecting people with the river and the city. The project, if approved, would mark a significant step toward enhancing pedestrian infrastructure and revitalizing the Chao Phraya River as a vibrant civic asset.
Connecting People and communities
The pedestrian walkway creates a direct, people-first connection between two riverfront neighborhoods, encouraging movement across the Chao Phraya without relying on ferries or road traffic. On one bank, Songwad Road anchors one of Bangkok’s oldest trading districts, shaped by centuries of river commerce and cultural exchange, while across the water, Khlong San incorporates historic character with contemporary life. Together, the crossing offers residents and visitors a calmer, more scenic way to move, inviting exploration rather than haste.
Environmental care and cultural importance sit at the core of the project’s planning and design approach. Detailed studies are underway to understand how the bridge may affect the river’s ecosystem, navigation routes, and overall safety. Attention is being given to the historic urban setting, ensuring the new structure blends with the cityscape rather than overwhelming the surroundings. Aimed to create a contemporary landmark that coexists with the river, preserves important views, and reflects historic character.
At the center of the bridge, the model shows a small garden area with a staircase that also functions as seating. The space is intended to allow pedestrians to rest and enjoy the river context. The design must also be adjusted to ensure it does not obstruct passenger boats, cargo vessels, or tourist ferries.
