Amaltash by Design ni Dukaan Blends Corbusier’s Modernism with Doshi’s Human-Centric Architecture

Located in Navsari, Amaltash by Design ni Dukaan is a striking residence in Gujarat, India, that blends modernist precision with deeply rooted cultural traditions. Inspired by the architectural philosophies of Le Corbusier and Balkrishna Doshi, the 12,000-square-foot home balances climate-responsive strategies, Vastu principles, and artisanal craftsmanship to create a contemporary yet emotionally grounded living environment.

    Climate-Responsive Architecture Defines the Home

Amaltash is shaped by a rigorous environmental approach designed to respond to Gujarat’s intense climate. Deep overhangs, shaded patios, and carefully positioned openings reduce heat gain while maximizing natural light throughout the interiors.

An 18-foot-high north-facing window system softly illuminates the living spaces, while solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, permeable surfaces, and dense tree cover turn the residence into a climate-responsive and sustainable tropical micro-ecosystem. The home’s sculptural geometry reflects a modernist sensibility where performance and aesthetics exist in harmony.

    Traditional Gujarati Spatial Elements Reinterpreted

Although contemporary in appearance, the house by Design ni Dukaan draws strongly from the traditions of Gujarati domestic architecture. A central courtyard anchors the residence, encouraging airflow and extending everyday life outdoors. Shaded baithaks (traditional informal seating spaces), layered thresholds, built-in seating, and transitional spaces create warmth and intimacy across the large-scale project.

Vastu Shastra (the traditional Indian system of spatial planning and architectural balance) principles were also integrated thoughtfully into the planning, aligning spatial organization with nature and human well-being while maintaining a contemporary architectural language.

Craft, Texture, and Materiality Bring Warmth to the Project

Material experimentation and craftsmanship play a major role in shaping the identity of Amaltash by Design ni Dukaan. The residence features a bespoke Dholpuri exterior finish— a hand-crafted textured surface developed on-site using specialized polishing techniques to create a tactile material quality with controlled imperfections.

Inside, locally sourced marble, sandstone, and granite are paired with custom teak-and-brass furniture designed by the studio. Collaborations with Indian artisans and designers further enrich the interiors, including woven installations, adding layers of texture and artistry throughout the home.
