Alper Derinbogaz and Refik Anadol collaborated for Augmented Structures V1.1 that acoustic Formations reanimate phenomena (sound, architecture, and visual arts) that may appear completed and concluded, but in fact are in a continuous process of development, change, and transformation. The animated façade was performed at the Yap? Kredi Culture Centre building on Istiklal Street, Istanbul.
The endeavor combines disparate disciplines such as sound, architecture, and visual arts, which all impact one another to such an extent that they cannot be separated. While the project, as an ‘interdisciplinary transformation’ project, re-examines the world in visual and aesthetic terms, it also challenges where art and architecture stand today and where they might go in the future.
Augmented Structures V1.1 forces each discipline to change its material state by transforming sound into mathematics, mathematics into architecture, and architecture into a living canvas, all while providing the viewer with a new media experience that is multi-layered, produces sound, moves, and breathes. The show takes place on the Galatasaray side of the Yap Kredi Cultural Centre, one of the urban landmarks on Istanbul’s most lively and popular street, Istiklal Caddesi. The performance honors the transformation of the city’s layers into a multi-layer new media artwork as an urban experience by blending them with those of different disciplines.
