The long-awaited Foster + Partners‘ masterpiece, the Zayed National Museum, finally opened its doors on December 3, 2025, in the heart of the Saadiyat Cultural District, coinciding with the UAE’s 54th Eid Al Etihad celebrations, giving the launch symbolic weight far beyond architecture.
From afar, the Zayed National Museum appears as a sculpted mound rising gently from the Saadiyat coast, its shape pierced by five soaring steel towers, each inspired by the wing of a falcon in flight. This symbolism echoes the UAE’s national identity and honors the love for falconry cherished by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
Falcon wings serve as solar-thermal chimneys, part of an ingenious passive-cooling system that draws cool air from ducts buried deep underground and channels warm air out. A climate-controlled interior without heavy reliance on conventional air-conditioning, a nod to sustainability rooted in desert tradition.
The mound itself, colored in warm-white tones reminiscent of Saadiyat’s sand, provides thermal mass and shade. This design, combining modern engineering with desert architecture, reflects a thoughtful combination of tradition, environment, and innovation.
Visitors approach the museum via the 600-meter-long Al Masar Garden, a landscaped journey through desert, oasis, and urban environments. Native plants, a working falaj irrigation system, sculptures, multi-sensory installations, and a chronological timeline of Sheikh Zayed’s life all prepare guests for what lies ahead. This garden path bridges nature, memory, and heritage, transforming the act of arrival into a symbolic passage from coast to civilization. Once inside, the museum unveils itself as both a monument to the past and a beacon for the future.
Inside the Museum: Storytelling in Space and Time
Spanning more than 56,000 square meters and rising to approximately 123 meters, the museum offers a generous and immersive experience. A light-filled lobby, designed as a civic “living room.” From there, visitors can explore galleries housed within pod-shaped volumes, suspended and arranged to encourage free circulation and exploration.
Six permanent galleries across two floors carry over 3,000 artifacts, of which around 1,500 are on display. The narrative spans roughly 300,000 years of history from prehistoric habitation to modern times.
Key galleries include:
“Our Beginning”: This gallery traces the life and leadership of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, presenting a deeply personal look at the nation’s founding story. Archival films, handwritten letters, recorded speeches, and personal belongings create an intimate portrait of the UAE’s formation and the values that shaped its early years.
“Through Our Nature”: A landscape-driven gallery, this section explores how the UAE’s diverse environments, from desert dunes and mountain ranges to the coastline and oasis systems, influenced the country’s cultural and economic development. Each zone highlights how geography shaped daily life, survival, and ingenuity across generations.
“To Our Ancestors”: This gallery unveils archaeological discoveries spanning more than 300,000 years, from the Paleolithic and Neolithic eras to the Bronze and Iron Ages. Ancient pearls, reconstructed tombs, early tools, and settlement artefacts offer a detailed narrative of human presence in the region, revealing a long history of craftsmanship, trade, and ritual.
“Through Our Connections,” “By Our Coasts,” and “To Our Roots”: Together, these interconnected galleries map the evolution of regional trade, maritime traditions, and inland life. Exhibits delve into pearl diving, boatbuilding, agricultural practices, early commerce, and the growth of urban centers. The combined storyline illustrates how movement, exchange, and cultural interaction shaped the UAE’s social and economic identity.
In addition to permanent exhibits, the museum includes flexible exhibition spaces, a theater, performance venues, shops, cafés, and community-oriented facilities, making it a living center for culture, learning, and public life.
By weaving architecture, landscape, history, and technology, the Zayed National Museum stands as a powerful symbol of national identity. It honors the memory of Sheikh Zayed while providing a platform to understand the UAE’s journey from desert settlements to a modern metropolis.
