A Studio, a Stage, and a Gallery in One

Through May 25, the Neues Museum Nürnberg transforms into a dynamic creative laboratory with Daniel Widrig: Working Out, a solo exhibition by the London-based, Nuremberg-born artist, architect, and designer. Blurring the lines between studio and gallery, audience and artist, Working Out invites visitors to experience the raw, unfiltered processes behind digital design and fabrication.

Far from a static display, the exhibition positions Widrig not only as a creator but also as a performer of process. Throughout the show, he will be physically present in the space, designing and fabricating new works in real time using state-of-the-art technologies, including 3D printing, CNC milling, and robotic arms. Visitors will witness firsthand the transformation of ideas into sculptural forms, experimental fashion, and architectural fragments.

The title Working Out plays on dual meanings: referencing both the physical and mental exertion of the creative process, and the visible unfolding of artistic solutions. Rather than concealing the messiness of invention, the exhibition celebrates it, showcasing raw materials, tools, molds, and machinery alongside finished pieces. Interactive workshops offer visitors the chance to engage directly with Widrig’s methods, including VR sculpting and generative digital tools. These sessions foster a participatory environment, reflecting the exhibition’s core ethos of collaboration and transparency.

Widrig’s pioneering work explores the intersections of art, design, and technology. From 3D-printed dresses developed with Iris van Herpen (named one of Time magazine’s Best Inventions of the Year), to sculptures and installations exhibited at the Centre Pompidou and the V&A, he continues to push the boundaries of digital creativity.

Through Working Out, the Neues Museum Nürnberg becomes not just a site of exhibition, but of experimentation, a space where the future of digital design is being shaped, moment by moment.
