The Torch: ODA’s Supertall Addition to the Times Square Skyline

A 325 metre supertall skyscraper designed by New York-based architectural firm ODA is under construction at 740 Eighth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Located at the edge of Times Square and the theatre district, The Torch combines hospitality with entertainment, an 825-room hotel with a public observation deck and a vertical amusement drop ride that merges tourism, accommodation, and leisure.

    ODA’s Vision for The Torch

Constructed by Extell Development, this 52-story supertall mixed-use Manhattan skyscraper in New York will be a new form of public entertainment. The fusion of a commercial hotel and a public-facing entertainment element highlights ODA’s design philosophy on creating a structure that integrates with its context and culture. Spanning 875,372 square feet, the spatial organization connects public and private spaces at multiple levels in an efficient design approach.

The design philosophy emerged from the immediate visible context of Times Square, where architecture and entertainment intersect. The slender form of the building breaks the conventional notion of the hotel and residential tower typologies by introducing public attraction into its structural core. The construction of the rectangular built form at the base has begun to rise dramatically, transforming into a spiraling glass tower at its peak. Inspired by the form and function of the surrounding buildings, the upper volume, which gives the tower its name, aims to serve as a new cultural and visual anchor for the Manhattan skyline.

The layered spaces enclosed by a glass curtain wall reinforce the transparency concept and offer panoramic views of the surroundings from the upper floors. Positioned in Times Square, the dynamic facade of the tower, composed of a reflective glass curtain wall, mirrors the light throughout the day.

At the street level, the tower includes retail shops, providing a direct connection to the lower level of the building. The majority of the floor plates are dedicated to 825 rooms on the main volume, with amenities including a restaurant, a lounge, and a pool deck. The public places at the top of the tower attract people with a 360-degree observation deck alongside the transparent thrill ride, nearly 100 metres down to the tower’s slender form, offering visitors an exhilarating view of the city.

The tower encounters diverse engineering challenges; a complex, slender form demands strategies to resist wind loads and ensure occupant comfort, the integration of an amusement ride requires an advanced vibration control system, and safety measures are needed. The design resolution resulted in a thoughtful strategy that separates the hotel’s private areas from public entertainment spaces at the top, ensuring a clear circulation movement.

The Torch represents New York’s spectacle-driven architecture and Times Square’s unique character of versatility, dense population, and landmark attractions for tourists. The integration of public functions into private spaces reflects a hybrid architectural style to create a new urban experience in a dense city shaped by tourism and density.
