Introduction to the workshop:

“Synthetic Vernacular using AI 2.0: Algorithms to Adobe” is a transformative workshop blending generative AI with architectural design. Accessible and practical, it explores the integration of parametric design, vernacular typologies, and natural building materials. The synergy of tradition and innovation is emphasized, empowering participants to envision real-world structures like institutional buildings, malls and homes. The workshop guides designers in utilizing tools such as Stability AI’s Stable Cascade and Midjourney image generator among others, fostering hands-on proficiency. Participate in reshaping the architectural horizon as we explore uncharted possibilities, transforming the future of design.

The scope of the workshop:

The design style we will use in this studio will primarily relate to arid regions, emphasizing natural building materials such as adobe or stone. Participants can expect to learn about vernacular architectural typologies, their aesthetic finishes, and how they can be replicated with the help of AI text-to-image tools. We will use the Midjourney image generator from an intermediary level and Stability AI’s Stable Cascade, LeiaPix depth animation tool, Krea.ai image upscaler, and Photoshop’s Generative Fill tool.

Objectives:

The workshop covers an intermediary workflow for AI-enabled tools. Students can expect to learn how to:
Use Midjourney & Stable Cascade’s text-to-image tools to generate consistent results incorporating natural building materials such as adobe or stone.
Use KreaAI and Photoshop to upscale, post-process, and refine results.
Use LeiaPix to create captivating videos with depth maps.

Aikin Karr is a pseudonym used by architectural designer and entrepreneur, AbdulAlim U-K. The name pays homage to his ethnic heritage as he redefines Sudano-Sahelian architectural design aesthetics and principles in tandem with cutting edge AI technology. With a unique focus on the evolution of vernacular architecture, he leverages artificial intelligence to explore contemporary and futuristic forms of traditional architecture. Studio Aikin Karr has been featured in HypeBeast, University of Michigan and Afrostyle among other publications. In addition, AbdulAlim studied architecture and environmental design at the University of Westminster in London, has 2+ years of experience working in a design-build firm in Nigeria, co-founded a startup with the aim of alleviating urban crime supported by the National Space Research & Development Agency of Nigeria, and is currently studying towards a master’s degree in computer science at Cardiff University in Wales with a focus in artificial intelligence, it’s role in the built environment and in the enterprise.
