M24 – Museum of Motorsport: Architecture Driven by Speed and Experience

M24 – Museum of Motorsport is conceived as the transformation of the historic 1961 Le Mans museum, France, into a contemporary cultural landmark. Initiated in 2022 through a joint venture between the Automobile Club de l’Ouest and Richard Mille, the project combines a complete renovation of the existing structure with a major extension designed by Frédéric Audevard. Located at the entrance to the Circuit des 24 Heures, it positions itself at the intersection of heritage, innovation, and public access, while responding to the ambition of delivering a new museum in time for the 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans.

    Architecture in Motion

The project moves away from a static display model toward an immersive architectural and museographic experience in which space, movement, and narrative work together. With a total area of approximately 8,600 m², the expanded museum allows for increased exhibition capacity and a complete rethinking of visitor experience. The architecture is shaped by the logic of speed, drawing directly from the aerodynamics of racing cars. Continuous lines and taut forms evoke racing trajectories, while smooth volumes suggest airflow, giving the building a sense of motion. In this way, the architecture simply contains high performance and reflects its very nature.

This approach extends into the circulation strategy, which becomes a central design driver. Visitor movement is created as a fluid, continuous flow, similar to air moving around a race car. Visitors follow a sequenced spatial journey where transitions are gradual and interconnected. Circulation becomes experiential, shaping how the museum is perceived and reinforcing themes of rhythm, speed, and progression intrinsic to motorsport.

Museum of Motorsport: Material Strategy and Site Integration

Materials such as aluminum are selected for their lightness, durability, and recyclability, while a green roof system contributes to rainwater management and environmental performance. These strategies align with broader environmental commitments, ensuring that the building maintains a responsible approach without compromising its architectural identity.

The building also responds to its context. Positioned at a key point along the circuit, it establishes continuity with the surrounding landscape. Its role extends beyond that of a museum, functioning as a gateway to the site and a cultural anchor within it.

    M24 – Museum of Motorsport

As a whole, M24 operates as a piece of cultural infrastructure. It is designed as a public and inclusive space, supported by strong local engagement, with numerous regional firms contributing to its construction. This grounding in place connects the project to its socio-economic context and reinforces its civic role.

What ultimately defines M24 is the consistency between concept and execution. The project simply displays how motorsport history translates the principles of speed, flow, and performance into spatial experience. Architecture, circulation, light, and material are brought together with a single aim: to immerse visitors in motorsport.
