Louis Vuitton Heathrow Terminal 2 Design by Marc Fornes

The Louis Vuitton presence at London Heathrow Terminal 2 combines retail luxury design with fashion, gastronomy, and advanced engineering in an aviation-inspired architectural design. The fuselage-like structure is conceived as a collaboration between the New York–based art and architecture studio THEVERYMANY, led by Marc Fornes, and Louis Vuitton Architecture.

    The Marc Fornes Fuselage Philosophy

The architectural intervention is conceived as a continuous loop that integrates the Louis Vuitton boutique and Le Café by Cyril Lignac into a single, cohesive form. Emerging from the terminal floor as a vertical plane, the facade unfolds in waves of light and curvature. It seamlessly blends into the surrounding space, creating an envelope of living crests.

The fuselage-inspired design metaphor describes the structure, designed to appear as a dynamic, aerodynamic body that has momentarily landed amidst the high-velocity flow of departing and arriving passengers. This metaphor is elaborated in the design through three distinct features:

Aerodynamic Curvature: The profile utilizes non-linear geometry to suggest movement and fluidity, mirroring the logic of aircraft construction.

Seamless Integration: Doors, windows, and retail thresholds are integrated into the skin with such fluidity that their outlines appear to dissolve into the larger surface.

Spatial Pause: While the exterior suggests motion, the interior provides a soft enclosure and a defined pause within the terminal’s infrastructure.

    Ultra-Thin Aluminum Skin

The facade comprises thousands of individually curved aluminum panels. Inspired by aviation fabrication techniques, the panels are assembled with visible rivets, emphasizing the construction process and forming a distinct aesthetic language. The exterior surface shimmers with thousands of precision-perforated patterns, creating a fine filigree reminiscent of both textile weaves and haute couture.

The use of digital fabrication and material engineering accentuates the built form. The structure utilizes ultra-thin materials to create a self-supporting, large-scale architectural body. The assembly eschews traditional elements such as beams and columns, adopting innovative digitally fabricated technology that relies entirely on its skin.

    The Role of Digital Twins

MARC FORNES / THEVERYMANY, Louis Vuitton Heathrow Terminal 2

The skin is structural and entirely self-supported, anchored at its crown by a circular oculus. To achieve the high precision and dimensional accuracy required for a complex curvilinear space, the team utilizes photorealistic digital twins.

The design team used digital replicas to verify physical dimensions within the challenging airport environment before construction. They also employed 3D modeling to identify and resolve structural issues prior to execution. The unique aspect of Marc Fornes’s design is its breathability, which serves as both a spatial and technical performance requirement.

The envelope incorporates a carefully calibrated layered system, with the space between the inner and outer skins functioning as a large air plenum. The crown of the structure, a circular oculus, serves as a critical stabilization point against the lateral and vertical forces of the terminal environment and functions as a compression ring.

A Landmark of the Art of Travel

The interior features warm tones and rust-colored banquettes, with a filigree ceiling that incorporates the brand’s geometric floral monogram patterns. The Marc Fornes collaboration at London Heathrow Terminal 2 represents the synthesis of structural ingenuity and brand heritage. It is a self-supported structure, serving as an architectural embodiment of the Art of Travel, redefining the luxury retail architecture within the modern aviation hub.
