The World Architecture Festival (WAF) has officially unveiled the shortlist for its 2026 awards program, recognizing 416 projects that showcase the breadth of contemporary architecture and design across the world. Spanning completed buildings, future proposals, landscape architecture, and interiors, this year’s selection reflects the industry’s growing emphasis on adaptive reuse, sustainability, cultural identity, and public impact.

The shortlisted projects will advance to the live judging stage at the World Architecture Festival, scheduled to take place 18–20 November 2026 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. During the festival, architects and designers will present their projects directly to international juries in WAF’s signature live critique format before category winners and the coveted World Building of the Year are announced.

This year’s shortlist brings together projects from a diverse range of countries, highlighting how architecture continues to respond to environmental challenges, urban transformation, healthcare, housing shortages, education, hospitality, and cultural preservation.

The 416 finalists compete across four principal award groups:

    • Completed Buildings
    • Future Projects
    • Landscape
    • INSIDE (Interior Design)

Within these groups are numerous specialized categories, including Housing, Creative Re-Use, Health, Hotel, Culture, Education, Office, Civic Buildings, Transport, Mixed-Use Developments, and Landscape projects.

One of the strongest themes emerging from the shortlist is the continued rise of adaptive reuse, with architects transforming existing structures into new civic, residential, and cultural destinations instead of relying solely on new construction. At the same time, future projects reveal increasing experimentation with resilient urban planning, climate-responsive design, and community-centered development.

Live Judging Remains WAF’s Defining Feature

Architects present the design process, technical solutions, and broader project impact during live sessions attended by peers, jurors, and festival delegates. Category winners are selected following these presentations before competing for the festival’s highest honors.

This presentation-based format has become one of WAF’s defining characteristics, encouraging dialogue around architectural ideas rather than focusing solely on finished imagery.

    Festival Heads to Fort Lauderdale

The 2026 edition also marks WAF’s arrival in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, introducing the festival to a new North American venue. Reflecting its waterfront setting, this year’s festival theme is “Water,” exploring architecture’s relationship with rising sea levels, resilient infrastructure, coastal cities, public space, and environmental adaptation.

Alongside the awards program, the festival will feature keynote lectures, exhibitions, networking sessions, and discussions involving leading architects, designers, engineers, and urban thinkers from around the world.

Winners to Be Announced in November

Following the live presentations, category winners will be announced during the festival before competing for the overall awards, including World Building of the Year, Future Project of the Year, Landscape of the Year, and World Interior of the Year.

With hundreds of projects representing a wide spectrum of architectural approaches, the 2026 shortlist offers an early look at many of the ideas shaping the profession today, from regenerative design and adaptive reuse to culturally rooted public architecture and innovative future proposals. The complete shortlist is now available through the World Architecture Festival ahead of the November event.
