Built Works designs Yogi’s Cabin as a quiet timber retreat set deep within the woodland of Great Park Farm in East Sussex. Organised along a simple east–west axis, the cabin supports yoga, movement, and slow daily occupation, with sliding openings framing shifting views of alder trees and a natural swimming pool. Blending Japanese domestic principles with local agricultural references, the design uses charred timber, deep eaves, and a restrained material palette to create a calm, immersive space rooted in its landscape.
Timber Frame Shaped by Woodland Context
The cabin is structured as a clear, open timber studio that prioritises lightness and adaptability. Large sliding doors open the interior to the surrounding woodland, allowing daylight and seasonal change to actively shape the atmosphere. The east–west orientation strengthens visual continuity across the site, aligning interior movement with the natural flow of light and landscape views.
Engawa-Inspired Threshold Between Inside and Out
Drawing from Japanese domestic architecture, Built Works cabin design introduces a continuous perimeter deck and deep eaves that form a sheltered transitional zone. This intermediate space extends daily use beyond the interior, supporting movement, rest, and meditation in a semi-outdoor setting. It also helps the cabin respond to the damp woodland conditions while maintaining openness to nature.
Charred Timber Skin Rooted in Local Craft
Externally, estate-grown larch is treated using traditional yakisugi (charred wood) techniques, improving durability while allowing the cabin to visually recede into the forest. Internally, locally machined Douglas fir defines structure and surfaces, creating a warm yet restrained environment. The minimal palette by Built Works ensures the architecture remains secondary to experience, light, and surrounding nature.
