Frank Gehry’s Dar Al Funoon Arts Institution Set to Open in Abu Dhabi by 2030

Abu Dhabi has officially begun construction of Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi (House of the Arts), a major new performing arts institution designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. Located adjacent to the Saadiyat Cultural District, the project is scheduled to open in 2030 and is envisioned as one of the Middle East’s most significant destinations for music, theater, opera, ballet, and contemporary performance.

    Frank Gehry’s Dar Al Funoon

Dar Al Funoon has been conceived as an architectural expression of performance itself. Gehry’s design is defined by a sweeping, fabric-like form that appears to flow across the site, creating a sculptural silhouette that evokes movement, rhythm, and the dynamism of live art. The building’s undulating envelope transforms the venue into a landmark visible from multiple points across Saadiyat Island.

A key feature of the project is its transparent façade, which blurs the boundary between the institution and the public realm. The design allows visitors to glimpse elements of rehearsals, performances, and cultural activity from outside. This architectural openness reflects Abu Dhabi’s broader ambition to position culture as a public and accessible experience.

The venue will accommodate more than 6,000 seats across multiple performance spaces. It will host a year-round program of concerts, opera, theater productions, dance performances, jazz events, recitals, and cultural gatherings. According to project announcements, the institution is scheduled to operate year-round, making it one of the UAE’s most active cultural destinations.

Dar Al Funoon continues Gehry’s exploration of expressive forms while contributing to the growing collection of landmark cultural buildings on Saadiyat Island. The project joins a district that already includes major institutions such as Louvre Abu Dhabi and the forthcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, another Gehry-designed project currently nearing completion. Together, these developments are transforming Saadiyat Island into one of the world’s most ambitious cultural districts.

Commissioned by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, Dar Al Funoon is expected to play a dual role as both a cultural landmark and an economic catalyst. Beyond hosting international performances, the institution aims to support artistic residencies, nurture regional talent, and attract cultural tourism to the emirate.

As one of the final major projects associated with Gehry’s career, the performing arts center represents more than a new venue. It signals Abu Dhabi’s continuing investment in architecture as cultural infrastructure, using design to create a permanent platform for artistic exchange on a global stage.
