To create the best possible atmosphere, the seating is arranged in a single-bowl, radial, three-tiered, continuous bowl design. When in use, these tiers form a compact and connected experience around the playing field, positioning spectators as close as possible to the action. This arrangement encourages a more intense atmosphere and delivers the most intimate and immersive experience imaginable. 7. TQL Stadium

Designed to be retractable, the roof can be left open between events to allow more light and air into the pitch or closed during events to protect fans. Designed as a grand tribute to African culture and spirit, FNB Stadium is one of the most powerful and iconic stadiums ever created by Populous. Its design, inspired by the form of an African calabash (traditional pot), features an earth-toned exterior that symbolizes unity and harmony.
A ring of lights at the base of the structure simulates the fire beneath the pot, while the gaps between the mosaic tiles allow the stadium to glow from within, mimicking the star-filled African night sky. A new roof covering, projecting from a massive spatial ring beam and covered with a PTFE membrane, helps capture the fans’ voices and generate energy.
The stadium, designed by Populous for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, saw its capacity increased from 40,000 to 94,736. The existing seating was rearranged to improve visibility, the upper level was extended, and the lower level was divided into two sections to create a new lower concourse. Strategic seating close to the pitch, designed to keep the crowd energized, allows fans to experience the match more than just watch it.
