RSHP wins design competition for new Zhengzhou Convention Complex

RSHP with Tongji Architectural Design (Group) Co. (TJAD) has been selected for the international competition to design the Zhongyuan International Convention and Conference Centre complex, which is located in the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone.

The region’s rich cultural legacy inspired the architecture. The three primary parts of the new construction are a hotel, a conference center, and a convention center. The convention center is presently in Phase 2 of its development.

One of the key features of the design is its connection, which is enhanced by an elevated spine spanning 1.7 kilometers that connects the hotel, the exhibition halls, and the three main entrances. This spine also helps with direction and accessibility.

The primary facilities are connected to the surrounding dining and retail areas by the central spine, which has two distinct circulation flows for quick and slow foot traffic. On either side of the central spine of the Convention Centre are sixteen show halls and associated services. The venue can meet a wide range of event and fair requirements, with each exhibition space having an approximate net size of 12,500 square meters.

The primary entrances from the central spine are indicated by three entrance pavilions that include areas for ticketing and security operations. The connecting corridors between the top and lower floors are provided by these pavilions. With travelators connecting to the spine, the visitor’s circulation channels are intended to offer a comfortable experience.

Richard Paul, Senior Director, and Partner, RSHP, says: “Our design for the Zhongyuan Convention Centre in China combines cutting-edge technology with traditional cultural elements, creating a space that meets the functional needs of large gatherings while standing as a landmark of innovation and state-of-the-art technology. Our goal was to craft an architectural experience that fosters global connections and celebrates local identity, ensuring a transformative experience for all who visit.”

The General Administration Department, Henan Airport Construction Development Co., Ltd, says: “The architectural design of the Phase II Convention Centre, the Conference Centre, and the supporting hotel facility is consistent in style with our Phase I Convention Centre. The large, cantilevered wings of canopies and the gable roof of the Conference Centre embody the spirit of Zhongyuan, which is characterized by its inclusiveness. The overall spatial arrangement is simple and elegant; it has an international style, with functional flexibility and iconic features”.
