    3D-Printing Ceramics: Advanced Digital Flow

To bridge the gap between the realms of digital and physical, 3D printing with clay has gained immense popularity over the last few years. The process adds another layer of intrigue to fabrication, where material and print paths must be finely tuned in order to achieve spectacular results. It is a compelling and exciting creation method, with techniques applicable from Object to Architectural scales. The 3D-Printing Ceramics workshop will cover most of these topics.

    The Scope of the Workshop:

In the 3D-Printing Ceramics workshop, you will learn how to seamlessly integrate the real and virtual, using real-world context to inform our designs and manipulating Gcode to create an artifact inspired by the systems that create nature. The digital creations will then be printed in clay, and the instructor will give an overview of the many factors that need to be considered to create organic yet precise creations with this fabrication method.

    Methodology:

A crucial part of the printing digital workflow is software hopping. In 3D-Printing Ceramics, We will start with Polycam to create a photogrammetry scan of an object to act as our context. In Rhino, we will create a base geometry and then jump into Grasshopper to leverage its powerful tools in order to give real-world meaning to our digital creation. Houdini will then be used to add a further layer of complexity before we head back into Grasshopper to manipulate tool paths to finely control the hand of creation (the robot). Josef will show how Gcode can be manipulated in order to gain fine control over the object’s fabrication, with these techniques applicable to PLA printers, clay printers, and industrial robots. We will learn how, even after the piece is printed, craftsmanship and traditional techniques can be used to add a human touch to our artifact.

    3D-Printing Ceramics

    Objectives:

3D-Printing Ceramics aims to give an overview of how a fluid approach using different software can be used to bridge the gap between the physical and virtual. You will learn how to create organic yet grounded designs and discover the fundamentals of the clay printing process. The workshop will be a follow-along format, however, unlike a tutorial, the main objective is to give a broad overview of a cutting-edge workflow encompassing some of the many different tools available to designers rather than an in-depth look at each of the tools.

    Program:

    Session 1: Saturday, 9th December

    • Introduction to Clay Printing & 3D Scanning
    • Rhino Base Geometry
    • Grasshopper workflow tutorial
    • Houdini workflow tutorial

    Session 2: Sunday, 10th December

    • Custom Tooltpaths in Grasshopper
    • Manipulating Gcode and preparing a project for print
    • Print live view
    • Post Processing

    Software:

    • Rhinoceros 3D
    • Grasshopper(with Wallacei and ladybug installed)
    • Houdini (Apprentice Version)

Notes: A 3D printer is not required for this workshop

    Josef Stöger

    3D-Printing Ceramics

Josef Stöger is an Artist and Designer with a master’s degree in Architecture from the Bartlett School of Architecture, London. He is inspired by the systems and processes that form some of the most beautiful structures in nature and how these can be used in our built environment to create designs that integrate seamlessly with the complexity of our global ecology. He has an incredibly varied background in VR Development, Film-making, Fabrication, and Digital design. With four years of experience working as a technical tutor for Bartlett students, his most recent collaboration is with Peugeot, who is 3D printing a ceramic sculpture to celebrate the launch of their new car. He now works as an Artist and Educator, creating high-value commission pieces and teaching the endlessly fascinating world of digital and physical design.
