Installed in Kensington Gardens, Jesús Rafael Soto’s Pénétrable BBL Jaune is an immersive artwork that explores movement, perception, and human interaction with space. The installation invites visitors to step inside the work itself, turning observation into participation. As part of Soto’s renowned Pénétrable series, the piece is a testament to the artist’s innovative approach to kinetic art and his belief that the viewer plays an essential role in completing the artwork.

    An Icon of Kinetic Art

Born in Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela, Jesús Rafael Soto (1923–2005) was one of the leading figures of kinetic art. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, he worked across drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation, constantly exploring how movement and perception shape the experience of art.

Instead of treating artworks as static objects, Soto created environments that encouraged physical engagement. His practice focused on dissolving the boundaries between the artwork, the surrounding space, and the viewer, making participation a fundamental element of the experience.

    Walking Through Pénétrable BBL Jaune

Pénétrable BBL Jaune (1999; 2023 Edition) consists of 4,000 yellow PVC tubes suspended from a steel framework, forming a 10-metre-long structure. Viewed from afar, the closely arranged strands create a shimmering moiré effect that gives the impression of constant movement. Up close, the installation reveals its true purpose and invites visitors to walk through it.

As people move among the suspended tubes, the work continually changes, creating shifting visual patterns and spatial experiences. The interaction between body, movement, and environment becomes the artwork itself.

Soto introduced the first Pénétrable in 1967 and later produced more than seventy variations in different colours and scales. This edition is based on the original Pénétrable BBL Jaune created in 1999 and was reissued by the artist’s estate in 2023 to celebrate the centenary of his birth. The work remains a powerful example of Soto’s vision of art as an active, participatory experience that evolves with every visitor who enters it.
